The papers cover the period 15 December 1971 - 17 January 1973. The purpose of the steering committee was decided at the meeting held on 15 Dec 1971, that is, 'It was agreed that the Steering Committee should be concerned with various aspects governing development of the Northern College of Music'. Core membership consisted of: the Principal of the Northern College of Music (John Manduell), Principal of the Northern School of Music (Ida Carroll), Acting Principal of the Royal Manchester College of Music (John Wray), Clifton Helliwell and Percy Welton. Matters discussed include student numbers, concert planning, student external activities, the proposed donation of the Chopin statue by the Polish Society of Great Britain, opera planning (including discussions on the College's first opera performance - Purgatory and The Bear), junior division, College colours, and the Blazon and Coat of Arms. Also included is a file (belonging to Percy Welton) containing papers relating to the opening of the College by HRH The Duchess of Kent. Papers include timetables, lunch menu, and seating arrangements for the opening ceremony. Copies of MS minutes of the Steering Committee notes: selected notes, 1971-1972.
