Gustav Theodore Holst (1874-1934) was a British composer. He studied piano and violin as a child and later worked as an organist and choirmaster. He was later allowed attendance at the Royal College of Music (after previous unsuccessful scholarships) and studied composition under Charles Stanford. He later learned the trombone and composed, conducted and taught music. He is best known for the orchestra suite 'The Planets' but also composed operas and other works.
