Grieg is writing to enquire about the requirements for Hallé's successor. He is making these enquiries on behalf of Professor Dr. Hermann Kretzschmar whom Brodsky knows and who is an inspired and excellent conductor. Above all, Kretzschmar would like to know how to conduct himself and also what duties and salary the position brings. These so-called young idealists do not like to boast about their own achievements these days. Grieg himself conducted the Manchester Orchestra and was enchanted by the achievements of the strings. That was in 1889, Grieg believes. This evening Grieg has been with Siloti at Friszsch's. Grieg closes by recalling the beautiful days with Tchaikovsky. Dated 6 Nov 1895.
